پس از کناره‌گیری جواد نکونام به دلیل شکست‌های پیاپی استقلال در برابر پرسپولیس و السد قطر، این تیم بدون سرمربی ماند. اکنون مدیران استقلال به دنبال انتخاب سریع یک سرمربی خارجی هستند و وعده داده‌اند که تا پایان هفته سرمربی جدید را معرفی کنند. پس از معرفی سهراب بختیاری‌زاده به عنوان سرمربی موقت، نام‌هایی مانند ژوزه پسیرو، آندره‌آ استراماچونی، ریکاردو ساپینتو و فرهاد مجیدی برای هدایت استقلال مطرح شده‌اند.
